About Us
Vecinos del Rio:
A community organization dedicated to protecting the culture and traditions and enriching the quality of life in the upper Rio Grande valley.
The organization supports efforts that ensure healthy land and clean air and water, works to protect the historic structures and archeological resources, and creates vibrant educational opportunities to help sustain the historic and traditional cultures.
Vecinos came into existence in 1993 in response to irresponsible mining in the traditional agricultural communities and on Mesa Prieta, the site of approximately 20,000 petroglyphs that date back as many as 5,000 years.
Since those dramatic early days, Vecinos del Rio has developed other ongoing projects dedicated to environmental and cultural preservation.
MESA PRIETA PETROGLYPH PROJECT: to protect, record, and develop a database of the petroglyphs found on the landform’s basalt boulders.
ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES: a major force in the creation of the Rio Arriba County Sand-and-Gravel Mining Ordinance.
ARTE SIN FRONTERAS: (Art without Borders), to support the creative, academic, personal, cultural, and social development of the community’s children through the arts while instilling personal excellence.
ORAL HISTORIES: realizing the need to preserve the knowledge and wisdom of the elders in the community, the Oral Histories Project is recording the individual stories of the older community members.
